Park Slope Brooklyn Therapist

Comprehensive clinical practice For individuals and couples seeking transformative growth and excellence in their lives.
Therapist Park Slope Brooklyn
Solution-Focused Psychotherapy (SFP)
As a Brooklyn therapist, I am one of the few psychotherapists in NYC who specializes in SFP. Instead of spending countless sessions painfully exploring problems in great depth, which often intensifies problems and lengthens treatment, I empathically and proactively focus on exploring strengths, goals, solutions, and progress in great detail. I also help clients gain insight into past issues and patterns and achieve any necessary healing, which we then connect to positive goals and solutions in the present.
Holistic &
Empathetic Approach
I offer a holistic, caring, and respectful form of therapy and life-coaching for individual adults and couples. I emphasize the use of innate inner strengths & development of new tools and tactics to solve problems and achieve goals, focusing on emotional, behavioral, career, educational, family, relationship, medical, or overall wellness challenges.
Diverse Therapeutic Techniques
Specializing in Solution-Focused Psychotherapy (SFP), I also incorporate Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness, and Life-coaching techniques. These methods are aimed at helping clients control and balance thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. You can learn to conquer procrastination, identify and implement action plans, and live in the moment.

Individuals
Welcome to a transformative journey towards holistic well-being. As a dedicated practitioner, I specialize in providing a unique and compassionate form of therapy and life-coaching for individual adults and couples. My approach is rooted in the belief that every person possesses innate inner strengths that can be harnessed to navigate life's challenges.

In sessions, I collaboratively work with you to identify and build upon your strengths and goals, guiding you towards practical solutions for the challenges you face. Unlike traditional approaches that dwell extensively on problems, my method is designed to accelerate progress and minimize the potential for intensifying issues or prolonging treatment.
Couples
Embark on a transformative journey toward stronger relationships and personal growth with our holistic and gentle approach to therapy and life-coaching. As a dedicated professional and Brooklyn therapist in Park Slope, I specialize in providing a caring and respectful space for couples.

I work collaboratively with couples to explore and enhance their intimacy, emotional connection, communication skills, life balance and overall relationship dynamics. We proactively focus on strengths, set achievable goals, and seek practical solutions, all while fostering a positive and forward-thinking atmosphere. Our journey will not only help you navigate the complexities of relationship challenges but also foster a deeper understanding of each other.
Life Coach
Life Coaching helps people accomplish significant goals in areas such as career development, education, and life-transitions. The Life-Coaching I offer is similar to the psychotherapy that I provide in that it incorporates SFP approaches and techniques, with emphasis given to identifying strengths, defining goals, formulating specific solutions, eliminating obstacles, coming up with concrete action plans, and carefully monitoring progress.

CBT and Mindfulness are also utilized in Life-Coaching by helping clients ground their thoughts and emotions, proactively conquer procrastination, and develop a healthy level of acceptance of relevant situations.

What Others Are Saying
Take a look at what our clients have to say about us.
I came to Steve when I was experiencing a soul-crushing series of professional setbacks. With his compassionate, solution-focused guidance, within a couple of months I rose out of deep self-doubt and landed a fantastic job. Though I had addressed the issue for which I'd sought his help, I have continued seeing him because his approach provides a safe space to tease out areas of discomfort or dysfunction your life, and then psychologically "white board" steps to break free of unhealthy or untenable patterns. I look forward to seeing Steve because he gives me forward momentum, not painstaking, backward-looking self-scrutiny (unless at times it's useful to go there). He is truly nonjudgmental, principled, organized, professional and exceptionally reliable. And - for what it's worth - I'm female and love having a male therapist - particularly Steve. I never feel weird or awkward. I find it brings an objectivity to the conversation that I haven't had with female therapists, and which I really value.
For seven years, Steve has helped me navigate the rockiest moments of my life with a degree of grace and positivity that the "old me" never would have thought possible. From coming to terms with a failing marriage, to building a wonderful home life with my kids and new spouse, and now currently developing an international speaking career, Steve has been by my side. He has provided me with consistent, positive, and useful support as I discovered not only who I really am, but also who I want to be. Steve is the first person I recommend to other professionals who find themselves facing life circumstances that seem impossible to untangle. I will always be thankful to him for his guidance and kindness.
Steve is warm, thoughtful, and professional. He creates a comfortable and welcoming environment while trying to find logical solutions to any issue you might be facing. He is also a great listener, and I would recommend him to anyone!
As a patient of Steve Katz's, I can attest that he guided me through the most challenging time in my life by helping me focus on my options more clearly. In addition, by jointly working on solutions, I learned to become a more independent problem solver.
Frequently Asked Questions
Understanding Your Therapy Journey
What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
CBT focuses on the connection between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Through CBT, I help clients ground and reframe problematic and distorted thoughts which can improve both one’s emotional state and lead to development of positive behaviors. CBT is helpful with a variety of emotional challenges, such as anxiety, depression, trauma recovery, and procrastination.
What is Solution Focused Psychotherapy?
Solution-Focused Psychotherapy (SFP) emphasizes identifying and building upon an individual's strengths and resources. SFP focuses on setting achievable goals and actively working toward solutions. This approach is known for its efficiency, positive outlook, and quick results.
What is Life-Coaching
Life coaching is a collaborative, goal-oriented process that helps individuals achieve personal and professional aspirations. It is forward-focused, providing guidance, support, and a road map to empower individuals in creating a more fulfilling life. As a Brooklyn therapist with extensive coaching experience, I blend therapeutic insight with practical strategies to help clients move confidently toward their goals.
What is Mindfulness
Mindfulness is focusing on one thing at a time, in the present moment, with your full attention, and with acceptance. Through Mindfulness techniques I help clients live in the moment, limit internal thought chatter, develop meditative practices, and achieve healthy levels of “radical acceptance” of one’s thoughts and emotions and situations and behaviors of others that they cannot control.
What is Couples Couseling
Couples counseling, or couples therapy, is a form of psychotherapy that improves relationships. It addresses communication issues, resolves conflicts, and enhances overall satisfaction. It provides a safe space for partners to explore challenges, strengthen their connection, and develop healthier patterns of interaction.
